Sandy Springs(30327, 30342, 30328) is a newer city, just north of Atlanta, founded in 2005. In 1842, the Austin–Johnson house was built on what is now Johnson Ferry Road. This road was named for a ferry boat that crossed the Chattahoochee River. The city is named for a natural spring in the oldest section of the community. In the 1950s, new subdivisions and homes began to spring up, as the metro Atlanta area grew northward. In early 1960s, Interstate 285 was built, connecting Sandy Springs to Atlanta and causing a housing boom. This was later boosted by the opening of Georgia 400. In 2005, after many years of fighting to become a separate city, Sandy Springs became the third largest city ever to incorporate in the United States.
The city is made scenic by its border along the Chattahoochee River on the west and the large commercial developments along I–285. North Springs is a large residential area on the northern end of the city. It is served by a MARTA rail station and is close to Perimeter Mall. The entire area features many trees and hills, which create a beautiful visual scene. Since most of the housing was built in the late 20th century, home styles include many ranches and 2-story traditional architecture.
